Tasting notes

The Friedlander Block is named after one of our founders. It was planted in the mid-1970s and is located on the top vineyard of the Andis Estate at an elevation of about 1500ft. The dry-farmed, head-trained parcel is grown sustainably, which results in low yields with smaller bunches. This produces a concentrated, ruby-colored, robust Zinfandel with an explosive mouthfeel. The wine has blackberries, raspberries, toasted fruit, cocoa powder, and sweet baking spice notes. It is perfectly balanced and rounded with firm, delicate tannins.

94 pts James Suckling  [v.22]

Great balance and a good, chewy texture give this taut and concentrated wine almost the feel of a Barolo. Fresh acidity and fine-grained tannins support sour cherriy, raspberry, black pepper and wild herb flavors. Built for further aging, too. Full-bodied. Drink now or hold.

93 pts Wine Enthusiast [v.21]

Andis 2021 Friedlander Block Zinfandel (Sierra Foothills). This wine is rich and concentrated with baked red plum, blackberry and cinnamon. Other notes waft through, including boysenberry, black cherry cream soda, Earl Grey tea and cardamom. Layers of creamy molten chocolate, dried herbs and minerality bring it together for a mouthwatering finish. Pair with braised beef cheeks. —T.P.
